Grieb & Benzinger Presents Unique “Blue Whirlwind” Tourbillon Minute Repeater
The German watch firm Grieb & Benzinger, known for its one-of-a-kind skeletonized watches with intricate guilloch embellishments, has released its latest, called Blue Whirlwind, a skeletonized tourbillon minute repeater based on a rare Patek Philippe caliber. At the heart of Grieb & Benzinger’s Blue Whirlwind is Patek Philippe’s Caliber RTO 27 PS, a rare, manual-winding movement with a tourbillon and minute repeater mechanism, which was famously used in the stainless-steel Patek Philippe Ref. 3939 donated to the 2011 Only Watch Auction. That watch was the top-selling lot in the entire auction, selling for 1.4 million euros. Here, this complicated movement has undergone more than 15 months of skeletonization and other painstakingly precise horological work. All the skeletonization and guilloch treatment on the movement with 336 components, it is one of the world’s most complicated was done by hand. Audemars Piquet-Sponsored Hydrofoil Trimaran Sets World Speed Record
The trimaran l'Hydroptre has established itself as the fastest sailing craft on the planet, setting a new world speed record with an average speed of 50.17 knots (57.73 mph) over one nautical mile. Fifty knots per hour is a magical threshold for sailing, similar to the sound barrier for aviation. Alain Thbault and his ten-man crew achieved this feat at their speed base in Hyres, France on November 8th, in a 28-knot northwesterly wind. L'Hydroptre capped off a fantastic series of records posted in the Mediterranean and set a new benchmark in the world of sailing. The 60-ft Hydroptre (from the Greek hydros, water, and ptera, wing), is a hydrofoil trimaran (the foils are actually underwater wings). It is a sleek and elegant craft with a central hull and a mast more then 90 feet high, stabilized by two side floats separated from the hull by huge 79- foot carbon crossbeams built at the Airbus plant in Nantes. The innovative design of the boat, which flies on submerged wings, cleverly co
Linde Werdelin SpidoLite II Tech
Linde Werdelin has announced two new limited edition models for their SpidoLite II series of luxury sport watches. The new LW SpidoLite II Tech features two variations of a watch that takes the recognizable SpidoLite II platform and moves it into the next generation as far as case construction and materials are concerned. The SpidoLite II Tech boasts case composition which employs both forged carbon and Linde Werdelin's own ALW, a proprietary metal alloy that is the result of two years worth of research and development. The Tech series shares the same 44 x 15mm case proportions as the rest of the SpidoLite II family and shares a similar look with a two-piece skeletonised dial, sub seconds at nine, and a date display at three. What sets the new Tech models apart is their high tech case construction, which is comprised of an inner case made of ALW (Alloy Linde Werdelin) and an outer case fashioned from forged carbon fibre. ALW is an metal alloy that Linde Werdelin reports to be 50% lighte
