Three On Three: Comparing The Patek Philippe 5170G, The Vacheron Constantin Harmony Chronograph, And The A. Lange & S?hne Datograph Up/Down (VIDEO)
There is something special about a hand-finished, manually wound, in-house chronograph. It is a category that houses so many of the timepieces to which so many of us aspire to own – and today we will compare three of the very best available in the world today. This original HODINKEE Three On Three pits heavyweight contenders from A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin, and Patek Philippe against one another in several categories: design, finishing, wearability, and collectibility. The thing about this comparison is, quite simply, there is no wrong choice – we purposefully selected the finest manually wound chronographs we could think of – all priced similarly – to be able to highlight each watch's strengths and weakness, of which there are many.Have a look at our video first and then read on for the details of these three incredible timepieces. What was the watch that Ryan Reynolds had in the beginning of the Hitman Bodyguard? I'm not a big Patel guy but the screen shots were awesome.
Will the 5140-G/J/R become a collectible ?
I was a frequent visitor to TRF (and the PP Boutique ! ) last year when I bought myself several PP's, including a 5140-G (white dial) as an every day wearer. I have recently been re-thinking my collection and decided to sell off a few of the discontinued classics to make way for some alternatives.. This has brought me back to TRF after an absence, which has led to the discovery that my trusty 5140-G is no longer in production. I thought that the 5140 was a real classic which would stay around rather longer. Does anyone know why the gold models were discontinued (leaving only the 5140P), and what has replaced them ?Oddly, a quick search threw up a post dated only a couple of weeks ago on another forum, in which someone was agonising between buying a new 5140-G and -J from an AD. I thought stocks were pretty limited even when in production, so it seems strange to see AD's still selling them. I wonder whether it is now attracting a discount (or perhaps a premium ?) once discontinued.
