Hanhart Primus Survivor Pilot Watch
When you break it down to the bare bones, watches are there to tell the time. Throughout their history, these tools have been redesigned to fit their environment. Nowadays, watches exist more as status symbols and as beautiful artisanal artefacts, and so the environment has become one of luxury, not survival. But before the digital age, before we had the time to appreciate the keeping of time, watches were called upon to play a much more important role. Dive watches, trench watches, pilot watchesThese timepieces were born of necessity, and with them, enduring design principles emerged.?The Hanhart Primus Survivor Pilot Watch is clearly of the same blood, but does its heart beat to the same tune? The Hanhart Primus Survivor Pilot is aimed at those with an "intense professional life and active leisure time."?That's a difficult balance for any company to strike. When the aim of design is balance, the risk is always compromise. The Hanhart Primus is trying to prove that it's possible to des
Flashlight With The Spirit Of A Fine Watch: The Lumencraft GatLight V3 Titanium
Watch lovers like myself seem to have tendency to love anything "engineered." Sort of like the nerd equivalent of "designer." I just get excited anytime I see a relatively simple item which has so much thought and effort (and hopefully quality) put in to it. We like nice watches, because they take the simple concept of telling the time, and make it more functional, more aesthetic, and more interesting. That is why I like the Lumencraft GatLight V3 Titanium. The self represented "flashlight made in the spirit of swiss watches" blows me away (with light). Designed and crafted by Swiss engineers. The GatLight houses a 240 lumen LED bulb for bright, white light, and a 30% lower power consumption than traditional light bulbs. The gatling gun style looks not only looks intensely cool, but serves to allow for greater heat dispersion due to the increased surface area. The high quality titanium body is constructed from 79 hand assembled pieces. Like any fine tool, you should be able to carefull
Side-by-Side: Sinn 556i, Archimede Outdoor Protect and Damasko DA36
Within the last couple of months I've had the pleasure of reviewing the Sinn 556i and the Archimede Outdoor Protect. We also have a review of the Damasko DA36 Black in the works. All three are "entry-level" German-made tool watches with nimble cases built for active lifestyles that are still office appropriate. One is a cult favorite, being well regarded by all who own or handle it, one has sort of gone under the radar, but is due its day in the sun, and the last has a strong cult following. Two are a bit more expensive, the other a hard-to-beat value. One is a bit more stylish, one a bit bland and the other sort of in between. For the fun of it, I figured we could look at these watches side-by-side, looking at where they are similar and where they differ.CasesOddly enough, the Sinn 556i and Archimede watches come in at the rather specific 38.5mm, despite having very different designs. First off, if you ever need proof that watch only needs to be 38.5mm to get the job done, these two w
Checking Out the Mir Automatic
There are many articles on w&w about cool looking, well priced quartz watches that end with the same, perhaps repetitious sentiment: "I love it, but I would love it more if it were an automatic." Often the comments on these posts support that sentiment too. One such watch was the blissfully simple and stylish Mir. It was a pleasure to wear, a pleasure to look at, and if it had just had a beating heart, which frankly doesn't matter to a lot of consumers, it would have been hard to take off. Well, until now, there has not been a brand that has taken this call to heart. Not until the Mir Automatic.Staying nearly 100% true to the original design (it's a drop thicker at 11mm), the Mir Auto adds a Miyota 9015 and a domed Sapphire crystal into the mix, adding a lot more watch cred, without adding a lot more to the price. In fact, it comes out to a very affordable $259 (price without VAT), making it one of the best values out there for 9015, let alone one with a? sapphire crystal. This
