Preview: Christie’s New York Top Lots
Christie’s December 14 sale to be held at 20 Rockafeller Plaza in New York includes 424 lots, and the stars of the show in terms of pre-sale estimates are Patek Philippe, Breguet, and Piaget. Three pieces are estimated at $250,000 to $350,000: Patek Philippe references 2499/100 and 1462, and a platinum Breguet ref. 3857. A Piaget ladies Kanthara is estimated at $200,000 – $300,000. Lot 198 is a Patek Philippe ref. 2499/100, manufactured in 1982. This 18K gold perpetual calendar chronograph with moon phases succeeded Patek’s first series-production perpetual calendar, the ref. 1518. Only 349 examples of ref. 2499 were manufactured over four different series. The reference remained in production until 1985. The pre-sale estimate is $250,000 to $350,000.This two-register stainless-steel chronograph, ref. 1463, was manufactured in 1955 and was retailed by Tiffany & Co. New York. Christie’s notes indicate that this watch appears to be the first example of a refer

Speedmaster 861 Opinion Request
I am new to collecting and would like your opinion(s) on a Speedmaster cal 861, circa early 1970's, that I recently purchased. The previous owner replaced the hands and hazelite crystal but, all else remains original including the dial. It came with its original bracelet but I put on a nice alligator band because I love the look and also so that I don't mess up the bracelet. All is in excellent vintage condition including the bracelet which show very little signs of wear. The opinions as the the following will be greatly appreciated.1. Does the replacement of the hands with new affect the value?2. What is your opinion as to its value with the new hands?3. What do you think the value would be if it was completely original.

Thinking of taking the Panerai plunge!
I am very much a Rolex addict with a sideline in Omega's. Panerai had never really entered into my consciousness except as a brand that Rolex supplied movements to many years ago.Now all that has changed. Looking around my AD the other evening I stumbled into the Panerai display case and was immediately smitten by a black Luminor Marina 8 day model. But it looked so big on my 6.5 wrist I just wasn't sure. The salesman of course said it looked fantastic Anyway, I thought I should do some research before deciding whether or not to buy one of these intriguing watches. It doesn't help one's research when the watch world is divided between lovers and haters of the brand with no one taking a neutral position. Something about this brand polarises opinion. My research has led me to favouring 2 Luminor models - the base and the Luminor Base 8 days. I feel I now prefer the clean dial look of these over the Marina with its seconds hand at 9. I think I'm going to go for the 8 day model - I like t
