The regulator clock gained traction in late seventeenth century watchmaking, before the time of radio-controlled master clocks. Their main purpose was to provide a central point of reference for clock and watch makers in a workshop. With separate dials for hours, minutes, and seconds, the clocks provided an easy way to get a precise read on the time when setting other devices. Regulator wristwatches, however elegant and interesting, can sometimes suffer from illegibility due to small dials and difficult layouts.
