The Watch that Broke the Sound Barrier: Zenith’s Tribute to Felix Baumgartner
On October 14, 2012, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner made history, becoming the first man to break the sound barrier in freefall, jumping from the edge of the stratosphere from a space capsule and landing in the New Mexican desert, 38,969.4 meters below. The watch he wore while making the jump was a Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th.Zenith, the venerable Swiss watch brand that has sponsored Baumgartner and his Red Bull Stratos team in its daring aerospace missions, and served as official timekeeper for the milestone jump, has this year released a new, personalized edition of the now-famous chronograph wristwatch, the Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th Tribute to Felix Baumgartner.Like the original Zenith El Primero chronograph, released in 1969, the tribute timepiece has that model’s groundbreaking tri-color subdial arrangement: light gray for the small seconds (at 9 o’clock), dark anthracite gray for the chronograph minutes counter (at 6 o’clock), tallying u
Frederique Constant Heart Beat Manufacture Dual Time Automatic Watch
Frederique Constant's newest watch with an in-house made movement is both useful and attractive. Building upon their core in-house automatic with an "open heart" display of the escapement, this newer model with the Caliber FC-938 automatic boasts the time with a second time zone in a subsidiary dial. Making for a good traveler's watch, the second time zone is displayed in a simple 12 hour format. AM/PM indication is preserved via a small day/night indicator located at 8 o'clock on the small dial. The new Heart Beat Manufacture Dual Time Automatic will come in a range of styles. Most (if not all) of them will be limited editions. I am not totally sure why they do this is as it seems Frederique Constant could go mainstream with the collection. The truth is likely in that they are constantly refining the collection and it makes more sense to build limited batches of these watches. Each of the watches come in 42mm wide case, with steel and at least one 18k gold model. The simple cases are at
Review: Techne Sparrowhawk II
The Techn Sparrowhawk II stands out in the inexpensive chronograph market. It is a well-executed aviator with sharp styling, great build quality and the added perk of an interesting movement at its heart. At $269 one does not usually expect something unique, but Techn manages to pull it off. The aviator market is fairly saturated, with offerings from brands across the price spectrum, from Timex to Steinhart to Bell & Ross. It's a look that does not change very much from brand to brand, but the Sparrowhawk II achieves something refined, that is clearly an aviator, yet not derivative. ?Combine this with the Meca-Quartz chronograph within and you can begin to see how the Sparrowhawk II is more that just an affordable watch, it's genuinely innovative.Case: PVD Coated 316L Surgical Stainless SteelMovement: Seiko VK63 Meca-Quartz ChronographDial: Black w/ Off-White indexesLens: Mineral w/ AR coatingCase Back: ScrewdownStrap: Khaki CanvasWater Res.: 100mDimensions: 41.5mmThickness: 11.7
Possible issue with my Chronomat Evolution
My Breitling Chronomat Evolution had been sitting in the bank for a week and I brought it home the other day. I wound up the watch and stuck it into my watchwinder. I went to go check the watch a day or so later and I saw that the watch was about 5 hours slow! The funny thing there was that the watch was still running when I saw the watch. My other watches were fine, so I know the power didn't go out or anything. I fixed the time and have been wearing the watch for the last few days. Now, the time seems fine. It hasn't lost time since.Any explanations?
