SIHH: Something (Really) Big From Panerai: Mare Nostrom 52mm Special Edition
Mare Nostrum is the chronograph that Officine Panerai supplied to the Italian Navy in 1943. Very few prototypes were produced C almost certainly three in total C of which first all trace, and then all relative documentation, was lost following the flood that hit Florence in 1966. Panerai’s discovery of one of the prototypes – now part of the collections at the Officine Panerai Museum in Florence – enabled creation of a new Mare Nostrum in a single edition of just 99 examples that reproduce the original almost exactly, with a few improvements. This new edition measures 52mm in diameter and, unlike the original, it offers a sapphire display back. The case is actually tonneau shaped, but looks round due to the wide, flat bezel. The watch is guaranteed watertight to 30 meters, consistent with the original, which was not intended for use under water.Like the original, this new Mare Nostrum uses a hand-wound mechanism: OP XXV caliber, deriving from a Minerva caliber from Pa

New incoming!!!
There was a thread a few weeks ago on collecting strategy and on what the actual iconic watches were. This made me think. Some of the watches I own came up quite often, i.e. the JLC Reverso, the AP Royal Oak and the Rolex Submariner. Others I own aren't that iconic, so I figured the next watch I would get would be another iconic piece. The budget for a random watch purchase wasn't a PP Nautilus unfortunately, so I was looking for something iconic that fit the random watch purchase budget. So here we go, an Omega Speedmaster Professional. Pretty much one of the most iconic watches out there. I've only had it for a day, but I'm liking it very much so far. The hesalite is really cool and I have ordered a NATO and Zulu strap which are, I think, the coolest on the Speedmaster Pro. Just a quick iPhone pic (I'll add more later):
Which would you choose - 5164R or 5168G?
I am thinking about one of these, and like both of them. I like the Aquanaut series, and have a 5167. The rubber/composite strap is really appealing. And I like the light weight. Are are my comments:5164R Aquanaut travel time - I really like rose gold cases. The brown dial is nice too. I travel a little, and the travel time feature seems like it would be useful, but it's not like I'm gone every week! :-)5168G Aquanaut - I really like blue dials!! My only concern is that I wonder about the size. I saw one once, but don't remember exactly how it fit. On the other hand, it isn't that much larger than the 5164.What are your thoughts on these? Thank you!
