Found: An Omega Speedmaster Gifted By Paul Newman
Paul Newman, as HODINKEE readers probably know, was both a renowned actor and a professional racing driver, who famously prompted his wife to gift him a Rolex Daytona to time his laps. He actually owned several versions of the Daytona chronograph, including one with an exotic dial that was later nicknamed after him (and which would go on to become one of the most collectible, as well as enthusiastically faked, watches to ever exist). So what is the connection between Paul Newman and a blue-dial Omega Speedmaster that just came up for sale? This very Speedmaster was actually a Christmas gift from Paul Newman to a member of his racing team almost 20 years ago. It is still in an untouched condition and comes with something very special. 1 OF 11 Paul Newman at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. First PP - 5167
Apologies in advance for bad photo from cell phone.I need to quit reading these forums - it is bad for my bank accounts!Well, after a long, long period of deliberation, I unloaded my 116520 Daytona and settled on a Patek - an aquanaut 5167.I'm pretty thrilled! It is weird to be without a Rolex for the first time in 10+ years (I've owned 3). But the PP is really nice! Here's a quick summary of why I made the switch. Usual caveat that these are my opinions only.Downsides for the Datyona - I found legibility to be poor due to lack of anti-reflective coating and very busy dial. And the watch never really sat comfortably on my arm and was in constand battle with my shirt sleves. Also, I wish I could see the movement!Upsides for the Daytona - Looks incredible and has an amazing history. Every watch fan should own a Daytona at least once. Rolexes are built like tanks. No need to baby them.Downside for 5167 - Wish the band had some micro adjustment feature vs. using a scissors to cut
Which bracelet Patek?
Hi guys,I am considering adding a PP with bracelet (white gold or stainless steel) to compliment my little collection and I need your help deciding this. I'm aware that the ones I listed below have irrelevant pricings. The candidates are ;1. 5711AWhat I like about this watch that it's so simple and thin and it being a timeless model. The only one without any complications on my list, but one of my favourite actually. Price is much better than the others listed below, too.2. 5712AComplication. Not much more expensive than 5711A with the complication.3. 5130/1GPrecious metal and world time. But some time (not very far) later, I'm definitely in the market for a 5131 (not sure if for a G or J yet), so that could bring this guy down in the list. Actually precious metal is an important factor since I'm not going to be in the market for another bracelet PP any time soon, so my only one in WG would be nice. If there was a 5712G with bracelet... :)4. 5980/1AThis can easily be my favourite. But t
A true red & blue GMT
We're all aware of the white gold Pepsi bezels appearing too purple and pink for some of our taste. But it looks like Rolex may have made some color corrections to the new BLROs. I noticed this in some of the press shots and double checked Rolex to confirm. Here's the comparison.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
New dials for Daydate 40?
