New from Techn: The Merlin Collection
Popular “budget” brand, Techn looks to have another winner on their hands with the recently released Merlin Collection. The military inspired pieces – reminiscent of airplane cockpit instrumentation and early mil watches – are available in a time (with seconds) only or a multi-function version. ?The movement inside of each is a Seiko Instruments quartz movement, specifically the VD78.A quick look at the specs reveal a very moderate 38mm size with 20mm lugs and a mineral crystal. Water resistance is shallow at 50M, which is logical for a watch with pilot-styling. The watch has a number of options for the strap at purchase: NATO, canvas or cowhide leather options are available for each model. The multi-function provides day of the week and date over the time only version.Prices for the time only models are $190-$200 and the multi-function runs $240-$250, depending on your strap choice.Tecnh has continued to put out well designed military-inspired timepieces and
Inside The Manufacture: Five Super Cool Things I Saw Inside The Patek Philippe Factory
I was thrilled to spend two days in Geneva with a little upstart company (that I think is really on to something!) called Patek Philippe. While the news was really around hand-crafts and the preservation of both hand engraving and enameling (as demonstrated on the monster new 6002G Sky Moon Tourbillon), we were treated to a tour of the PP factory. We saw a lot of amazing stuff, and now for your viewing pleasure, here are five of the coolest things I saw while inside the Patek Philippe factory: 1. ?These Two Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater Pocketwatches Minute repeaters are, in my very humble opinion, the ultimate complication. They are beautiful, romantic, and each entirely unique. They exemplify what makes traditional watchmaking so interesting. They are also incredibly difficult to make. Here are two vintage minute repeating pocket watches that just happen to be repeaters. Oh, and perpetual calendars. While the first, w
My ROO may be a keeper.
I put my AP Panda on a big test tonight.Timing my porterhouse steaks on the grill.Using the chrono. And I was able to see the time in the subdials. With my failing eye sights at twilight. The red needles on white tick marks stood out over the black dials.Passed the test. Good bear.

Patek Steel quality, Website and Brand direction
I recently purchased a sub after being torn between the no date and Aquanaut (for those interested look for my thread titled Aquanaut vs Sub ) but had a few questions regarding Patek steel quality, website and where the brand is headed1. The Rolex just had more of a shine to it than the Patek. I am guessing this has something to do with 904L Steel that they use? Does Patek use 316L? Anyone know anything about Patek's steel quality?2. Also does anyone else think Patek's website is a little bit too 'clunky'? For a brand this big shouldn't they invest in a better website? Brands like Rolex, VC, ALS and AP have great websites I am surprised Patek dosen't3 And lastly, does anyone think we will see bolder, younger models from Patek? A lot of people can't afford PP Complications and Super complications- when their existing customer base for those watches eventually dies out how will they attract the younger smartwatch wearer to the brand? I think they need to be looking into more entry level
