Preview: Christie’s Important Watches Geneva
On November 15 at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, Geneva, Christie’s will present 387 lots, including “A Connoisseur's Vision Part III”, which together with Parts I and II, represent the most important private Patek Philippe collection ever offered at auction, and the most expensive collection ever sold. The star of this sale is an exceptionally rare 18K pink-gold, two-crown worldtime wristwatch, ref. 2523, with 24 hour indication and blue enamel dial by Patek Philippe. Manufactured in 1953, Lot 114 was originally retailed in Milan in 1957, as confirmed by the accompanying Extract from the Archives. This is the 35.5mm “large version” of the reference, and only 14 examples are known to have come to auction. The estimate is approximately $1.5 million to $2.5 million.Lot 234 is an 18K pink gold Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph with moon phases, ref. 2499, manufactured in 1957. This piece has been consigned by the family of the original owner,
Luminox SureFire 2211 Wristlight Tactical Watch
We have seen tool watches specifically?designed to?be used by?divers, fighter jet pilots, navy seals, scientists, railroad engineers, and a vast number of other unique professions. Tactical watches, however, are few and far between, for they have to be designed to meet the unique requirements of?an extremely niche market of professionals. The Luminox Surefire 2211 Wristlight Tactical watch is?among these "endangered species," as it combines the legibility and reliability of a?Swiss Luminox quartz watch with?the 2211 Wristlight by?SureFire.SureFire is a California-based company that specializes in the production of?weapon-mounted lights and laser sights, shield lights and baton lights, as well as?hand-held lights. The 2211 Wristlight, as its name suggests, is a rectangular flashlight that is worn by members of the L.A. police on the firearm support-hand wrist.?Beyond offering a?"hands-free" use, this flashlight is different from your average flashlight in that, as SureFire puts it, it i
The Horological Society Of New York Introduces Watchmaking 101, A Public Class Sponsored By The HODINKEE Fund
In the 1950s, students at New York City high schools had the opportunity to take a class on watchmaking. This class was taught and the curriculum developed by members of the Horological Society of New York. Today, HSNY and HODINKEE are teaming up to announce Watchmaking 101, a revitalized version of this initiative. 2 OF 63 Watchmaking 101 is a single-session class in which professional watchmakers teach students will learn how a mechanical watch movement works and the fundamentals of using watchmaking tools. In this hands-on class, students will also learn to disassemble and reassemble a mechanical watch movement. 3 OF 63 Previous experience is not required, the class is free, and there is no need to be a member of HSNY. And unlike the 1950s version of this class, you won’t need to be a student at a New York City high school – Watchmaking 101 is open to the public. 4 OF 63 The first Watchmaking 101 class was held on February 16th a
Breaking News: Watch Worn By Steve Jobs In Iconic 1984 Photo Of Apple Founder With First Mac, Just S
We've just found out that a quartz Seiko watch from the 1980s, that was owned and worn by Steve Jobs, just sold at auction for $42,500 – and we'd bet cash money that's the highest price anyone has ever paid for a simple quartz Seiko reference 6431-6030. The sale was part of an auction that included several other pieces of Steve Jobs memorabilia, authenticated by his long-time house manager, Mr. Mark Sheff (a letter of authenticity is also included). 1 OF 4 ADVERTISEMENT The watch itself is pretty much as unremarkable as a watch can get: an inexpensive quartz Seiko that Jobs, if the condition of the strap is any indication, bought and then wore daily, probably without giving it a lot of thought. However, the thing that elevates it to historic treasure status is that it's the watch Jobs was wearing in 1984 when one of the most iconic photographs of Apple's co-founder was taken: that of him with the very first Macintosh
