Thompson Tells Watch-World War Stories at WatchTime New York Event
Veteran watch journalist Joe Thompson, editor-in-chief of WatchTime, entertained attendees at the WatchTime New York show last weekend with stories about his 38 years covering the watch industry. In a presentation called On My Watch: Four Decades Covering the Watch World, Thompson said that he was fortunate to get to cover three revolutions: the quartz-watch revolution of the 1970s, the fashion-watch revolution that started with the Swatch watch in the 1980s, and, most importantly, the mechanical-watch counter-revolution, or renaissance, in the 1990s.Thompson began his presentation by declaring, The mechanical watch is doomed! After a pause, he went on: If you were a young watch reporter in the late 1970s, you didn't know much, but you did know one thing. You knew that the trusty tick-tock, which had had a good 400-year run, was doomed. You knew that because everybody in the industry told you so. Thompson said that for someone like him, the WTNY show, so full of mechanical watches
AP chrono question

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch help !
I really don't know anything about Omega watches so don't be harsh if I say anything stupid I want to know about the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch the one with the Sapphire Crystal see through caseback.I saw it today at an AD and I don't know why but it just hit me. I was drooling all over it I always wanted an affordable chronograph watch with a decent quality and a bigger case ( I think it's a 42mm ). So far I've realised that the Speedmaster is a bit of a bargain ! I know that you get a lot of history but I really have no clue about Omega's reliability or quality.Being a hardcore rolex fan I am a bit confused whenever I think about Omega's as I always thought that Omega watches are a step below rolex in terms of quality, reliability etc. ( even though I've heard that they are great timepieces ). So what do you guys think ? Is it really worth it ? By the way what's the retail price for one of those ?I'll check the price tomorrow at the AD but I would like to compare the Greek price wi
Ref no. For patek perpetual where everything is in windows?
To me this is the cleanest calendar out there:Do they make a perpetual like this where perhaps the leap year is kept in a small pin hope window like some of the perpetual chronos? Keeping the clean theme. What about the above with a clean moon phase as well (without 24hr indicator), and perpetual ?Would appreciate the feedback
Impure thoughts...
I struggled hard to overcome the voices in my head daring me to run out the door clutching these treasures at the Christie's viewing in Hong Kong...PP5016PPP5207G and 5074JLuckily, I am far too honest (and I hear Chinese jails aren't very good!), so I satisfied myself listening to the musical chimes before handing them back to the auctioneers...MW
