Two New Panerai Watches Feature Linear Equation-of-Time Function
Panerai added a new complication to its lineup at SIHH 2015, and it did so in a very Panerai way: the brand’s first Equation of Time function debuts in both a new Radiomir 1940 and Luminor 1950 watch, represented on the dial by a linear scale. Scroll down to read more on the new watches, both of which boast an eight-day power reserve. The equation of time, a sophisticated astronomical complication that measures the difference between mean time and solar time (and explained in more detail here), is the signature function of Panerai’s new P.2002/E caliber, a manual-winding movement based on Caliber P.2002, the brand’s first in-house movement that debuted in 2005. The movement, with a diameter of 13 3/4 lignes, stores a power reserve of eight days in its three spring barrels.Caliber P.2002/E powers both new Panerai watches, the Panerai Radiomir 1940 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio (PAM00516), with a 48-mm case, and the Panerai Luminor 1950 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio
WatchTime Q&A: Seiko Watch CEO Shinji Hattori on Seiko’s First U.S. Boutique
Seiko Corporation of America has opened a boutique at 510 Madison?Avenue in New York between 52nd and 53rd Street. The official opening was August 19. Seiko has many boutiques in Asia but this is its first one in the United States. On hand for the occasion was Shinji Hattori, CEO of Seiko Watch Corp. and chairman of its parent company, Seiko Holdings Corp., who is the great-great-grandson of Seiko founder, Kintaro Hattori.Shinji Hattori led a delegation of Seiko executives from Japan for the official opening of the boutique and a celebration party at 620 Loft & Garden in New York. A special guest of honor at the party was Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who is a Seiko ambassador.Earlier that day, I met with Hattori in New York to discuss the boutique. The following is an excerpt from the interview.WT: Why is Seiko opening a boutique in the United States?SH: Seiko has been seeking the most ideal time and location to spotlight our products that cater to the affordable luxury timep
Pellikaan Timing Hendrik Lorentz Watch
When it comes to watches drawing inspiration from gauges and instrumentation, you definitely have some choice. Most of these take the form of aviation watches (as the cockpit dials are a popular thing to mimic), but we have seen inspiration coming from some more grounded dials as well. Among these, the Pellikaan Timing Hendrik Lorentz, mimics the look of scientific instrumentation of years gone past. For starters, the matte black hands and indices contrast sharply with the pearled silver dial, which makes for a crisp, understated, and extremely legible dial, protected by the sapphire crystal at the front. And speaking of the indices, take a closer look at the dial: there are actually three tracks, one for each hand of the watch. This is something that stems from the "local time" formula of?Hendrik Lorentz. Now, if you are like me, you probably have not heard of Lorentz: he was a theoretical physicist in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and he created a series of works which were the basis
Watch Art Interview With Korean Designer Eerune
When some first asked me a few years ago why I loved watches, I pointed out a few key reasons to explain my fascination with the small machines. The first reason was that I enjoyed the mechanical, functional nature of timepieces. The second reason was that I was beckoned by the rarity of some watches and how collecting unique watches appealed to my personality. Last, I pointed out that timepieces were mostly intrinsically artistic. Not only are skilled watchmakers able to produce aesthetically beautiful watches, but also those that artistically use a set of necessary elements to indicate information and look good in the process. So over time, I've met many people who have identified with these three elements as well, but what is great is how each collector or watch lover seems to manifest their appreciation of watches in a special way. Let's take the South Korean artist who prefers to go by the name Eerune. As a professional illustrator, he combines his design skills with many of the wa
Profile Original Senator Diary
For our part, the team of luxury - Insider is particularly knee-wobbly with the prospect of a significant timekeeper that links us to personal milestones. After all, a watch is something that you wear so it is by its nature very personal. However, there is a bit of a snag. Mechanical tickers more sublime failed to set alarms more than 24 hours in advance and even that is very impressive, the first introduced this alarm 24 hours only in 2005. Enter the journal of Glashotte Original Senator, to configure an alarm to 30 days in advance.
