My First Grail Watch: Mike Margolis
Welcome back to an original watches-dealer feature, "My First Grail Watch." In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after. Today, we are speaking with Mike Margolis, a fellow who has worn quite a few different hats over the years, as well as being a lifelong collector of various things.watches-dealer (ABTW): Who are you, and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Mike Margolis: I am the North American distributor for H. Moser, Hautlence, Anonimo, Cyrus and C.H. Wolf Glashtte i/Sa watches. Previously, I was president of Girard-Perregaux North America, and Sales Director of Hublot of America.ABTW: You've had quite a tour through the watch industry. How did you get your foot in the door?Mike Margolis: I met Jean-Claude Biver while he was the CEO of Blancpain, and I was the timezonewatches-dealer Blancpain Forum moderator. We became friends, and did some events together. When he went to Hublot, he asked for my help,
Double Mini Incoming
I finally got the GP strap and I love it on my RG, the red sides work so well with the RG and black ceramic pushers. Also got a white cap, the quality is really nice and it's very well made, feels more substantive than the Gucci cap I paid an extortionate amount for on Bond St.
Patek for a noob
Considering buying a used Patek as a daily wearer and my 1st Patek, for a bit north of $20,000. Work in an office on weekdays and typically wear business casual on weekends (shorts in summer). Can't stand Patek sport watches (Nautilis, Aquanat, etc.) Prefer yellow/pink/rose gold to white gold/platinum. Going against the Patek aesthetic, I like watches that attract attention, so a larger size would probably be best .Saw a 5170J with silver dial in person and loved it vs. the few other (smaller) Pateks on display but at 45-50K used, it's way out of my price range. A 5205R-001 would probably also fit the bill but again too expensive. Considering stretching to a 5146. (I've never seen any of the latter two watches in person.)Any recommendations?
Which chrono: 5980, 5170 or Platona?
Hi all, I've got a 5980 which, although I'm very happy with, I can't help thinking about what's next. My 3 favourite chronos are the 5980, 5170g and the platinum Daytona. Each very different, but fantastic in their own right. Which would be your pick of these three?
Should I sell my Panerai?
Greetings everyone!!A few months ago my dad gave me first expensive watch (Who got it as a gift a few years ago). Panerai PAM 114. I've never owned an expensive watch before (except for an Omega Seamaster, which I sold). I liked Audemars Piguet but their prices are insane for me. In the short term, I hope to buy a Rolex Datejust. Now back to the Panerai. I did some research and found that it is a good watch. It's really nice looking, but I don't feel that it fits me as a guy in my early 20s.Now what I was thinking is selling it and buying a Datejust or putting some more money for an Audemars Piguet. But as I have no experience with Panerai I hoped to get some insight from Panerai fans. How much should I sell it for? I have no box or papers, but I'm sure it's %100 authentic.Where is the best place to sell it? I know eBay could be good. They'd take a %13 and there is this buyer protection, which from my understanding is very harmful for a seller without a established reputation. I heard of
