Cost Of Entry: Panerai Watches
Welcome to?the second installment in our Cost of Entry series of articles, where we go hands-on?with?the most affordable, entry-level watches of?today's leading luxury watch brands. In our first article, we looked at Rolex and the Oyster Perpetual, and today, we are checking out?what?Officine Panerai?has to offer with its Panerai Luminor PAM000 Base Logo watch. The remarkable popularity of Panerai is something that needs no introduction to most. Officine Panerai was purchased through the Vend?me Luxury Group by luxury industry giant Richemont SA in 1997; and since the dawn of the new millennium, Panerai has enjoyed a lasting C and for a while, seemingly endless C growth and expansion that was?matched by only a handful of other brands. Chances are, if you are reading this, you either already own a Panerai and are thinking about whether also getting the base model is a good idea, or you are interested in the brand and are planning on "entering it" sometime soon. Now,?as many of the former
Hands-On: The A. Lange & S?hne Richard Lange Jumping Seconds
It’s not too much to say that for us at HODINKEE, one of the highlights of the year is seeing new pieces from A. Lange & Söhne at the SIHH. Naturally, not everything is a home run, and if you go through our office everyone will have their own personal favorites (as well as watches they think weren’t entirely successful) but in general, right now, in fine watchmaking, we (and I) feel that A. Lange & Söhne is one of a very small handful of watchmaking companies really taking the necessary time, and putting in the necessary effort, to produce watches that absolutely deliver on the promise of craft and attention to detail that’s implicit in the phrase haute horlogerie. 1 OF 6 As I said, everyone has their own personal favorites; I’ve always had it pretty bad for the Richard Lange family of watches and the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds just pulled into the pole position. It’s not the most complex of the Richard Lange watch
AP "Equation of time" dial change: Royal Oak/Juels Audemars
Hey Guys,Im about to purchase my very first AP. I have gone throw the model lineup and discovered that the model i want does not quite exist. I would like to have the Royal Oak Equation of Time (.audemarspiguet/en/wat...uation-of-time) but with the skeleton dial from the Juels Audemars collection (.audemarspiguet/en/wat...T.OO.D002CR.01). The calibre 2120/2808 is the same on both models. I have not yet approached AP with my idea. What do you guys think, is it technically feasible and what the reaction from AP would be? will they even allow it even if its possible?I also made some photoshopping of how the watch will look. I havent decided yet whether whether i want it in steel or gold so i made both versions. I also changed the brown strap to black one on the gold version. Do you know if there is a rubber strap available for this model?
Chuck Maddox passed away
Dear friends,I only found out a few minutes ago, while visiting over at TZ...Oh what sad news... dear Chuck Maddox, amongst many many many things a source of endless inspiration, has passed away...Sincerest condolences to his family and his friends...There are many fellow readers (here and elsewhere) who knew him far better, but - lacking better words while still in shock - I hope I'll be forgiven if I repeat my simple and sad note I just posted over at TZ, as better words don't seem to come to me right now...Chuck, everything I came to know about this wonderful hobby I owe to you! It was through your restless and wonderful work that the world of this hobby came alive at first and then opened up to me! Through your articles and the few email exchanges shared, my own curiosity was pushed to the limits. So, dear Chuck, it is with a heavy heart that I am now left with nothing else but a most heartfelt THANK YOU!!!!A THANK YOU that goes beyond anything I can put into words right now...Rest
4-digit vs. 5-digit vs. 6-digit Sub
Hi. Another thread inspired me to come up with a ridiculous hypothetical. I know that many in these forums like older Submariner designs, but still prefer reliable new/like new condition and don't want to spend vintage collector money on the old stuff. If you want to buy a new Rolex in a store, the only option is obviously the current SubC (assuming it was actually in stock. ) So, if Rolex announced today that they'd be willing to retool and make only one version of today's Sub/SubDate brand new at today's retail price, would you vote for them to simply keep making the 114060/116610, or would you ask them to switch and go back to making either the 5512/1680 or 14060/16610 versions of those watches?
