Learning Digital Illustration With Watches: Interview With Wrist.im Founder
By day, Matt Johnston is a web designer and developer, and as a hobby, he digitally illustrates wrist watches on his website Wrist.im. About a year ago, Matt decided he needed to learn more sophisticated digital illustration, and to do so, he decided to create digital illustrations of some of the watches that he personally owned.Matt explains that he was fascinated by the "user interface" of watches and the challenge of indicating the time in a clear, yet interesting manner. Johnston's first project was to illustrate his simple Timex Weekender. Over time, Johnston has created a small collection of wrist watch illustrations, many of which include code that allows them to indicate the time in your web browser. What I found so interesting about the Wrist.im project is the focus on watches that many seasoned watch lovers might consider basic or pedestrian. Perhaps Johnston's most moving work is the digital recreation of a simple and timeless (and quite retro by today's standards) Casio F-91
Apple Hires Marc Newson, iWatch Smartwatch Watches Likely To Be Designed With His Help
Big news today as Apple has announced its official hiring of Australian designer Marc Newson, who will work directly with Apple's head of design (Sir) Jonathan Ive. My understanding is that Newson will retain his ability to work with third party clients, but don't expect him to be designing watches for anyone else. Apple hasn't specified what Marc Newson will be working on specifically, but I believe it is safe to say that his first major projects will be on the iWatch (or iTime, or whatever Apple decides to call its upcoming smartwatch device).Of course, the big question everyone has is whether or not Apple will announce a smartwatch device next week during their annual new product announcement conference. Many people seem very confident that Apple will release a smartwatch this year or in early 2015, but I am not so convinced. Not only do I think the battery technology doesn't exist to have the type of time between charges that Apple expects, but a slew of recent new hires over the l
In-Depth: The Very First Heuer Carrera, Explained
Ben's in-depth article from this summer dissecting the 1963 Mark 1 "Double-Swiss Underline" Rolex Daytona on the occasion of its 50th anniversary has already become a reader favorite. And while just last month we saw an early 1963 Daytona sell for close to $300,000 at the Christie's "Lesson One" Daytona auction, we believe that it wouldn't be right to let 2013 pass without diving into the origin and details of the other legendary chronograph celebrating its 50th anniversary: the (TAG) Heuer Carrera. 2 OF 32 Mark 1 Rolex Daytona and First Series Heuer Carrera The Carrera and The Daytona The 1963 Carreras and Daytonas have more in common than you might think. First, the dials were made by the same manufacturer, Singer, and the movements were made by Valjoux (although Rolex made a couple minor tweaks to its Valjoux 72s). You will notice that the dials of these 1963 Daytonas and Carreras even have the same exact hour markers,
