A New Case for an Old Classic: Patek Philippe’s New Calatravas
Patek Philippe has a well-deserved reputation for being rather conservative in its watch designs and rarely giving in to transient trends. Thus, even a subtle change to one of its classic models garners attention among watch cognoscenti. At this year’s Baselworld, the brand introduced the new Ref. 5227, a Calatrava in a slightly larger case and a new, hinged dustcover over the exhibition caseback. The first Calatrava, Reference 96, was launched in 1932, the same year that Patek Philippe was acquired by its longtime owners, the Stern family, and has been a mainstay of the brand’s portfolio ever since. And while most watch aficionados know that Patek Philippe is a full-fledged manufacture that makes its own movements, many may not realize that for decades now it has also made its own cases, from sketches to final, polished product. Thus it is with pride that the company touts the new “officer’s style” case of the Ref. 5227, which is slightly larger than those
JEANRICHARD Aeroscope "208 Seconds" Watch For Capt. Sully
This past week in a special presentation ceremony held at the Tourneau Time Machine flagship store on 57th Street in Manhattan, JEANRICHARD unveiled a special limited edition timepiece called the "208 Seconds" commemorating The Miracle On The Hudson - which was the plane that had an emergency river landing and was piloted by captain Sully.JEANRICHARD has had an official brand ambassador relationship with Captain Chesley Sullenberger, hero pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 for the past year.? Looking At Liquid Metal Watches With Omega
The modern arms race with watches isn't about gears and pinions, but rather materials. It may appear that brands are hot on beating each others' movements but they know that such a war would be a joke. The race for the most accurate movement slowed to almost a halt when quartz watches hit the scene, and there are almost no new viable complications to be invented. The secrecy and excitement in the world of high-end watches is all in discovering, creating, and exploiting the hottest new materials. We've seen this over the last 10 years more than ever. Ceramic, titanium, carbon fiber, silicium, and other new or previously under-utilized materials are more than common now. Even within those categories are new alloys, manufacturing techniques, formulations, uses, and colors. For those who only get hot and bothered by calibers, I say start looking outside the watch more often. In about 2009 Omega announced that it would be using a new type of material called Liquidmetal. What arrived soon afte
Speedmaster Meteorite Dial
I'm considering purchasing this piece. Does anyone own one and what are your thoughts?
How hard is 5167 to source in the UK ?
Decided back in May that my next purchase would be 5167 on rubber strap. My first Patek.I have an AP RO and do not what another bracelet watch hence not considered the 5711.My usual AD told me should have one coming in end June/July and it still has not arrived.Happened to pass another AD last week that told have one in but someone was ahead of me and was viewing it on monday. It turns out that is the bracelet version and the other person has passed on it. Now been given the hard sell that Patek will not be supplying these as rubber only option and if pay steel price they will throw in rubber strap and deployment in for free( Still 2k more then rubber only version)Can anyone shed anylight if Patek are controlling 5167 supply with just rubber straps. If this is really the case guessing my usual AD will probably not get one in near future ?I'm not really keen to source from overseas due to possible VAT hit and ideally want totally brandnew watch ( 1st owner )Any advise/thoughts would be
