Auction Watch: Sothebys April Auction Shows Tepid Results, But Doesnt Lose Ground
The following timepiece auction analysis post is by Chris Meisenzahl. He is a long-time watch enthusiast and daily Speedmaster Pro wearer. He blogs at amateureconblog.blogspotwatches-dealer/ [update 01-04-2013 - his blog moved to?pretenseofknowledgewatches-dealer/] and can be followed on Twitter at twitterwatches-dealer/speedmaster.On April 13th, 2011 Sotheby's held its Important Watches and Clocks auction in New York. This auction offered a great number of items that are interesting for various reasons: antique clocks, dress watches, and some sporty models. Let's take a look at a few of the pieces available. After flipping through the list one of the first to catch my eye was lot #116, a 2005 Zenith from the Thierry Nataf era. The watch is a titanium automatic diver's chronograph from 2005. Sometimes when I wonder if Nataf's regime was real or a dream, I see a piece like this and remember. Help with C series 5402
This watch is supposed to be a C series, but the AP logo is on top, not the bottom. I know for the A series it would definitely be on the bottom and don't recall seeing any other C series with the logo on top, but don't know if this true for all C series. Also, I have never seen a blue dial on a 5402, but I'm not an expert. If you are, I would really appreciate your thoughts on the authenticity and originality of this piece. More photos are available if needed. Thanks
Serious reliability questions on modern RO's...
I recently wanted to buy a Ro, the regular model new style in 41mm, here's a link to show you which one I'm talking about as I am not a specialist and don't know the OP references:.shop.rivierawatch/fr/...oyal-oak-.htmlThis grey dealer having sold me and my wife a few watches, we have developed quite a nice relation with him and he is very honest. While wanting to buy a watch that he has in stock, he told me to avoid buying one as, according to him, OP has a 25% return rate on their RO's, how is that even possible??? For me 25% return of new watches to the manufacture for defects is just crazy, especially for a brand like AP.Does anyone know about this and have any explanation about how such a thing is even possible?Always thought that AP were nearly flawless watch movements and that you could buy your eyes closed, not according to my grey dealer, since I was hesitating between that one and a Blancpain, that he doesn't have, he told me it would be better to get the BP, that they didn't
