Swiss Cubli Takes The Balance Wheel To A New Level
The Cubli isn't a watch, but if you love mechanical timepieces you are going to love this robotic cube. Designed in Zurich and no doubt somewhat inspired by mechanical watch movements, the Cubli is an ultra-modern robot that feels like what happens in Switzerland when people with a focus on the past also focus on the future. When I imagine how the watch industry can better interact with the technology industry I think of something like this. What is Cubli? It is a 15cm perfect cube that moves by itself using a series of spinning wheels. The wheels create momentum but also provide balance due to the power of centripetal force. Not being a physicist I am not going to even attempt to explain how it works using all of the proper terms. What you need to know is that it is amazing to see in action. The result is a cube that "walks" and can stay balanced on a point, even on moving surfaces. In addition to moving and balancing, the Cubli can also jump.Inside the Cubli are what the makers refer
Ochs und Junior Watches Interview With Beat Weinmann
On Jan 27th, I had the pleasure of talking to Beat Weinmann of ochs und junior, as a follow-up to my review of the selene tinta. Allow me to thank Mr. Weinmann for his time.PH: One of the things that came up in the comments on my review is the cost of ochs und jr compared to other Swiss brands. Briefly put, why so much for an unpolished titanium case and basic ebauche?BW: There are several reasons for the costs, mainly due to nonstandard cases and limited production runs. Most case makers have minimum order quantities of 500 or more, which is more than the entire annual production for ochs und junior. We wanted a 2-part, unpolished case with no movement ring, and no manufacturer could make that for us. Having them made by Peter Cantieni allows top quality and small quantities, but of course the per-unit cost is much higher. It also allows much faster turnaround on new ideas and parts, and we felt it was important to work outside of the industry. Our watch cases are somehow like raw conc
Titanic DNA Day & Night - What Time Is It You Ask. At This Price, Does It Really Matter?
Earlier this year saw the release of the incredible, yet arguably excessive, new timepiece series from Romain Jrome, the Titanic DNA, a unique offering that uses parts of the actual ship in its construction. In what seems to be a year of firsts for this relatively new brand, Romain?Jrome has introduced its own special interpretation of time in its extraordinary new creation, the Titanic DNA Day & Night. Limited to a series of nine, it is the world's first watch not to display the time, however, that did not seem to do anything to deter those with disposable incomes far exceeding my own. The Day & Night sold out within 48 hours of its launch earlier this year as watch fanatics snapped up the US$300,000 timepiece. With its combination of symbols and watch complications, this exceptional object houses the first RJ One movement, composed of two tourbillions on the foundation of a differential system a world first! The transmission of energy symbolizes the passage from one life

5270 Daily wear?
Hi all,Simple question really. Does anyone know how a watch like a 5270 holds up to daily wear?I'm not talking about scratching the case, more how the movement etc holds up to constant use?I'm looking to buy a GMT BLNR. One of the reasons is from everything I've read and the conversations I've had it seems that these watches can be worn for years, they sound fairly bulletproof. How does something like a 5270 compare to this? It costs more than ten times as much and is from one of the best names out there, but are they too delicate for more than occasional wear? Could you wear it day in day out for a lifetime?I would love to hear your thoughts. J
