Watches NEWS
Porsche Design Group Ends Watch Production Relationship With Eterna
Interesting news today as Porsche Design and Eterna have announced that they have terminated their watch making relationship. For years Porsche Design (designed) watches were produced by the Swiss watch maker Eterna, located in Grenchen, Switzerland. As of March 10th, 2014, the two companies have announced the termination of their license agreement to develop, produce, and sell Porsche Design branded timepieces.Sadly, I did see this coming. Porsche Design has aligned itself with some interesting watch companies over the years including, most notably, IWC. Their run with Eterna helped them to produce some of the highest quality, most interesting Porsche Design watches since the company's beginning in 1972. It seemed like Eterna was an excellent and long lasting partner. Eterna had its own problems though, and while very interesting, Eterna brand timepieces were not doing as well as they could have been.In a sense, Eterna watches were plagued by being too focused on interesting movements
Linde Werdelin DLC Hard Black II Limited Edition Watch
Linde Werdelin experimented with DLC coating on the first round of Hard Black watches and these were a great success, all selling out. They are back with the Linde Werdelin Hard Black II that brings an even hardier version of the popular DLC (diamond like carbon) coating that is now ever harder. Like the image below implies DLC coated watches are truly built like a truck. The coating is just that tough (also scratch resistant). The watch is based on the Linde Werdelin "The One" dial and uses the standard Linde Werdelin watch case that will accept the The Rock of The Reef Instruments for land or sea exploration. Inside the watch is the high-grade automatic ETA 2892-2 mechanical movement. The black color of the case and thick alligator leather strap make for an appealing an aggressive look. The lume on the hour markers and hands is a friendly canary yellow color. It is a soft touch to the watch, and allows the Hard Black II to be very legible. Linde Werdelin has currently been experimenti
On The Block: Four Timepieces Possibly Owned By President Truman
On Saturday, November 8, Heritage Auctions is selling four timepieces possibly owned by President Harry S. Truman: an engraved Movado religious coin watch, a Baylor presented to President Truman in Texas, a gold-plated Vulcain Cricket, and a steel Longines. While we can say with confidence that the Movado and Baylor were Truman's, I don't believe we can be certain on the other two. Why?Back in February, Doyle New York auctioned some jewelry from the estate of Margaret Truman Daniel, the only child of President Harry S. Truman and First Lady Bess Truman. The items in the sale seemed to stay under-the-radar and someone cleaned up and got a great deal on a number of lots. Since then, some of the items have been listed at Heritage, including three timepieces back in May. However, the items were a jumble of pieces, including some from President Truman and Clifton Daniel, Margaret's husband. I believe we can say with confidence that the items personalized to President Truman were his, but it
Royal Oak Bezel Screw
Hello all,Still having a tough time deciding between a royal oak or offshore (narrowed it down to the silver dial 15400 or the Safari). From the research I've done, I noticed the offshore doesn't use white gold bezel screws (rather stainless steel screws). Anyone know why the offshore a do not use the gold screws and the composition of the white gold? Also, I read a review of a royal oak and it said the screws can turn yellow due to lack of rhodium plating due to small size. I'm assuming this isn't true, but would like confirmation. Thanks.
RAAF Breitling
Nancy's son out west has an old friend, now living in Australia, visiting for the holidays. He's now a fighter pilot in the RAAF. I received the pic below in an email this morning, and here's the text of the messages: Very cool, definitely not a safe queen! Is it a RAAF issued watch?AlYep...he flies an F-14 Tomcat for the Australian Airforce.79 of these were made. He got #11. It was the number of his first plane. His watch is light. Made of Titanium.Cool watch...
