Basel Preview: Corum Admirals Cup Minute Repeater Tourbillon 45
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Admiral’s Cup, Corum is launching the Admiral's Cup Minute Repeater Tourbillon 45. The movement, caliber CO 010, took 12 of Corum’s best watchmakers 2 years to develop. Corum wanted to avoid the traditional slide to wind the repeater, fearing that on a sporty watch, it might catch on something and damage the mechanism. The solution was to wind the repeater via the bezel. The repeater components were conceived and developed to guarantee the precision and beauty of the tone by considering its power (expressed in decibels), its precision (note correctness), its richness (expressed in number of partials), and its reverberation (duration of each note). The minutes-rack, placed at the heart of the ringing mechanism, is inverted compared to traditional minute repeaters in order to bring strength and precision to each note. It has also been enlarged to permit a wider lift angle to each tooth, extending the time between notes. The racks hitti
Uniform Wares 200 & 300 Series Watches
Designed in London, Uniform Wares presents their second collection of timepieces with the 200 Series watches. UPDATE: Just when I was about to publish this article I learned that Uniform Wares also announced an upcoming 300 pieces Chronograph watch. The collection is based on the design on wall clocks (clearly), with a case that enhances this look featuring a lugless design. In the spirit of pieces such as the Mondaine Swiss Railways watch and the famous Max Bill watches, this functional minimalist design is a modern Bauhaus style classic and arrives with a reasonable price. Thanks to Ivan by the way for pointing this brand and collection out to me.The 100 Series watches were of the same exact design design vein. Looking at the collections side by side (you can see their 100 Series watches here), the 100 Series pieces feel like women or kid version of the 200 Series watches. Both collections are quite nice, but the 200 Series is more refined, has better components, and is larger. At 40m
Decoding The MSRP: What Retail Price Means, And What You Should Pay
Prices are a funny thing. We often don't understand why we pay what we do, nor do we often understand why some places can or do charge more for the same goods. In the retail goods market, there is such a thing as the MSRP, or manufacturer's suggested retail price. I have no idea where this price comes from. The best I can understand, there is a secret smokey room meeting where such numbers are obtained. MSRP prices attempt to combine the cost of production along with design, marketing, administrative costs, distribution, and of course profit. The profit margin on an MSRP is rather thick. Not only because the manufacturer need to make a profit, but so does everyone in between. This involves at least one other party, which is the retailer. Often times the retailer is broken further down and various mid level or sales people need to make a cut. This is all part of the process of getting you valuable goods that you want!Another thing you need to know is that retailers are keen to the fact t
Introducing the Hexa Q500
Hexa is young watch brand that made a fair amount of noise in the affordable watch world earlier in 2013 with the release of their 500-meter K500 diver. Hexa was founded with the goal of developing "purpose-built instruments that feature innovative and original design solutions" and with the K500 it appears that they delivered on that promise. Ranging in price from $624 to $799, the K500's are certainly affordable, and their uniquely asymmetrical, rugged design give them a signature look. Now, Hexa is back with the release of their second watch, the Q500, a more affordable quartz version of the original K500. What the brand is affectionately referring to as "a grab-and-go quartz tool diver" the Q500 offers the same case design found on the K500 at a decidedly more budget friendly price of $350 with custom Italian rubber dive strap and optional upgrade to 5 link bracelet. Also like the K500, the Q model is designed, built and tested in the US with 2-year manufacturers warranty by Lm-Tec
ROO Movement and General Questions
Advice needed........ I am very fond of chronographs and the AP ROO is growing on me. I have been trying to research AP (website has way too many offerings for me to sort through) and been peeking in around here from time to time for info but I have a few questions.1. Which 44mm AP model has the panda dial and black ceramic bezel?2. Out of curiosity is there a 44mm Diver?3. Some people say the chrono movements are outsourced to JLC some say in house....does anyone have a clear and accurate answer?4. The rose gold one thats 44mm that has the black ceramic bezel and black dial, which model is that?I have no way of looking at these locally as there are no dealers, I would like to do as much research as possible so I am prepared on my upcoming trip as there are ADs there. Thanks in advance!
