Event Recap: New TAG Heuer Ambassador Tom Brady Launches The Carrera - Heuer 01 Chronograph (Live Photos, Pricing)
Last night in New York City, new TAG Heuer ambassador Tom Brady and CEO Jean-Claude Biver launched the Carrera - Heuer 01. The Carrera - Heuer 01 is a huge achievement for TAG Heuer – an automatic chronograph with a manufacture movement at a very attractive price. I know what you're thinking – not another celebrity brand ambassador, but it turns out Tom Brady is a real watch guy. I spoke with Mr. Brady after the event to learn more. 1 OF 4 I'll be honest, I am not a football fan and I don't know much about Tom Brady's career. None of that mattered though – Mr. Brady is a very friendly guy and is really into watches. It turns out that the first mechanical watch that he bought was a TAG Heuer Carrera, after winning his first Super Bowl in 2002. We took a look at the new Heuer 01 together, and he explained that he appreciates the timeless style of the Carrera, both vintage and modern. When I asked about his watch collection, he laughed and e
Technical Perspective: Stopping The Whirlwind: Four Tourbillons With Stop Seconds, And Why That Matt
One of the single most important features of watches intended to keep very accurate time is the presence of a stop seconds function. The single most important purpose of the tourbillon – as Breguet originally conceived it, certainly – is to make a watch more accurate. You would think therefore, in a rational universe, that you would see the tourbillon and a stop seconds function paired frequently, if not invariably . . . but you'd be wrong.First of all, let's talk tourbillon. The basic idea behind the tourbillon is pretty simple: it's a solution to a really old problem in watchmaking, which is that a watch will run very slightly faster, or slower, depending on what position it's in. This is mostly due to how gravity pulls on the balance and balance spring in different positions. For example, think of the balance, which has at its center the balance staff (a very, very thin steel pivot). The tips of the balance staff sit inside the holes of two jewels, and wh
IN THE SHOP: Twelve New Vintage Watches For Sale, Including An Amazing Tudor 7032 With Box & Pap
It's that time of the week again, everyone! Yes, the HODINKEE Shop has been re-stocked with a dozen new vintage finds curated by the team here at HODINKEE. And as we said when we launched this initiative a few weeks back, what we've found for you are nothing if not honest, original examples of some truly special watches. Let's get into it. A 1940s Mono-Rattrapante Bovet Chronograph 1 OF 15 We'll start with one of the most fascinating watches of the lot – this Bovet Mono-Rattrapante. First of all, Bovet of the 1940s has very little, if anything, to do with the Bovet of today. Back then they were making elegant watches with classic designs and in the case of this wonderful Mono-Rattrapante, downright fascinating concepts. We all know what a rattrapante, or split-seconds, is, and all also know it is one of the holy grails of horology – a complication reserved for highest echelons of watchmaking, in particular back then! What Bovet did here
