Watches NEWS
Introducing the Portsea by Melbourne Watch Co.
When last we looked at Melbourne Watch Co., I was pleasantly impressed by their first watch, the Flinders. It was well executed, refined, had a few surprising details and, most importantly, was enjoyable to wear. Beyond all else, it made me make a mental note that Melbourne Watch Co had some design chops, some clever ideas and clearly was a brand to watch. Today, we're excited to talk about their next watch, the Portsea, which is currently kicking ass over on Kickstarter, having quickly blown through the initial goal and one stretch goal.It seems as though Marine Chronometer inspired watches are making a bit of a comeback. Sure, several brands have seemingly always offered classic interpretations, but we've seen a handful recently release ones, both affordable and not, that take the look, restyle it, making watches that are new designs. The Portsea is one of these watches, and to date is the most unique and perhaps the best looking. Named after a seaside locale on the Mornington Penins
HODINKEE Events: View The 2011 Harry Winston Basel Collection In NYCIncluding Opus Eleven
Click to view inviteHarry Winston had a really strong showing at Basel this year, and we're not even talking about the undisputed star of the show, the Opus Eleven.? You can tell the brand is paying a lot of attention to timepieces, and as CEO Frdric de Narp said in his presentation to us, it's amazing to see what Harry Winston has accomplished in only 20 years of watchmaking. The Harry Winston 2011 collection is expansive, and while the Opus is surely the focal point, the rest of the pieces are rather refined, and supremely elegant.? We'll be highlighting a few of them over the coming weeks, but in the mean time, we would like to invite you to view the entire collection in New York City. The full Harry Winston collection will be on display on Wednesday April 27 and Thursday April 28 at the HW boutique on 5th ave from 10am-6pm both days. If you are interested in coming in to see it, send a note to RSVP@HarryWinston and let them know when you'll be there.? We promise you, you won't want

114270 Explorer vs 11610 Submariner
Back in November 2016 I acquired a 2008 V serial 114270. This was my second Rolex, having bought a M serial 11610 Submariner in 2008 Below are my thoughts on the watch, with some comparison made to my Sub. Technical observations I will leave to those more qualified that me, but they have practically the same movement, but the Sub has a date wheel and therefore a new ref.Why the 114270?Being a huge James Bond fan the first Rolex had to be a Submariner, and a collection of NATOs were purchased not long after to recreate that Sean Connery look. But even then the Explorer appealed to me. I have always like the Explorer for its simplicity. I view it as a hybrid, part sports watch, part dress watch. I am also a fan of the GMT and the Daytona, but in the former is too similar to the Sub and the latter too expensive. I admire the DJ, but prefer the versatility of the Explorer. It looks great under a tough jacket going on a walk through the woods, and at the same time looking great under a shir
