Inside The Manufacture: How Are The Dials Of The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Made?
SIHH is just 10 days away, and the story of this year's show will likely be the 40th anniversary of Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak. While the famed ultra-thin movement (the thinnest in the world with a full rotor), the amazing Genta design, the incredible finishing on the stainless steel case, the fact that the watch essentially created the luxury sport watch category are all great things, the one thing most often overlooked is the unique design to the Royal Oak's dial.Since the very first Royal Oak was sold to the Shah of Iran, and those 1000 A-Series pieces left Le Brassus, they featured dials with a tapisserie pattern on them, a weaving pattern that forms the square and lozenge motif that captures the light and accentuates the timepiece’s "geometric relief." But just how exactly is this pattern created? Well, AP has been subcontracting the production of its Royal Oak dials to one famed dial manufacture all the way from the beginning - Stern Creations. What is this Omega? Is it worth servicing?
So my mom was cleaning out her cupboards and she stumbled upon this vintage Omega that she got from her boss a long time ago when she started working. I have the box and all paperwork including the original purchase receipt, date of purchase, serial number, etc.I couldn't find any markers on the underside of the watch, but the receipt is dated November 20, 1977. The gold strap that the watch is on right now isn't original, but I have the original leather strap as well also in mint condition (pictured). Is it worth restoring? The watch is in pretty much mint condition since my mom has never worn it for the past 30+ years. However due to its age it obviously would need some servicing.Any insight into what it actually is would be really helpful!
While visiting a local AD looking for a white, stick DJ, I found this:
I contacted my Omega dealer and it arrived today. At 41.5mm, it is a hefty piece weighing in at 155gms.I'll try to take some better photos over the weekend.Fr. John?
DJII. Love it or hate it
New to the Rolex world and was scanning the FS threads. I saw a DJ II ref 116300 rhodium dial with blue arabics. I thought it was a real eye catcher. I started to do some digging vs the DJ 41. There were alot of comments that it was a Rolex failure, that it was a dog in the line up etc. Why all the hate? Please enlighten me.
