Seeing in the Dark: Luminescence in Watches
Wrist watches are naturally quite useful for their intended functions, as we watch-nerds know, especially when you can see them. When it comes to low (or no) light conditions, however, they can get tricky to read. The problem of legibility goes back as far as the history of the wristwatch itself and as technology has evolved, so has the legibility of our watches. A variety of materials and chemicals have been used over the years to bring luminescence, or lume, to wrist watches, with the first solutions coming in the early 1900’s.The early practice of applying lume to wrist watches, around the time of World War I, involved mixing the radioactive material radium with zinc sulfide. Radium had been known since it’s discovery in the late 1800’s and alone in proper doses it has some luminescent properties glowing blue. However the glow of radium alone was not bright enough and the amount required to make it useful would emit too much harmful radiation.if the dial says ̶
15300 VS 15450. What do you say? - Pics (POLL)
What is your opinion? My wrists are 6, maybe just very slightly a little larger.I think both work well. The 15300 was the manager's at the AD, not in great condition but I got the chance to try it out at least to see how the 39MM 15300 looks.Oddly enough it fits my wrist better than the 15202 which doesn't sit very well. The 15450 silver dial is beautiful, the watch is not small, but definitely does not have the presence of the 39MM 15300.Is it just me or does the silver dial on the 15450 give the appearance of a dressier watch?Which do you think looks nicer on my wrists?
Incoming today!
I have an incoming on the truck for delivery today. As a hint, it is something Omega. I'm excited to give it some wrist time. Details to follow.
Incoming!!! 5167 (second and final time)
Guys,I had not had the chance of doing an incoming in quite a while, and this one is one to celebrate for.Last year I got this from DavidSW for a great price. They were not super popular I think. Then a few months later a collector friend offered me 2x what I paid for it. It had to go. I'd been looking to get this watch back for months. I literally called all 90 ads on pateks website. None had it. The best they could do is put me on list.Anyways, last week a fellow forum member gave me a tip about a local place who had 2 mint ones. And hey! It's back!! It's got papers, box, etc. It was bought originally in Sept 2016.This time I bought the bracelet version. I also bought the clasp and rubber straps straight from Patek, they should be here next week. Im also glad I kept the green one and brown I bought for the one I had last year, so I should be set.Moral of the story: think carefully when flipping!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Patek ID?
Hi, guys. I don't know anything about Patek watches, but I'm trying to help a friend find out more about this one. Can you tell me more about this piece? When was it made? What model? Value? Thanks so much!
