Urwerk UR-106 Lotus Is First Women's Watch From The Avant-Garde Luxury Brand
For 2015, Geneva-based avant-garde modern mechanical watch maker Urwerk presents their first ever watch for women in the Urwerk UR-106 Lotus. The Urwerk UR-106 Lotus will come in two limited edition models and follows an extensive "women in watches" marketing campaign by the brand. Let's just say that after talking about all the important female influence in and around the brand, the debut of Urwerk's first dedicated product for ladies was not a surprise. In some ways, the Urwerk UR-106 Lotus is a cliche, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. How is it a cliche? Well, on a very basic level, it follows a trend of watch makers, even in the niche part of the luxury watch industry, to now produce timepieces for both men and women. Some of these brands are those that some fans might feel have "no business making women's watches." That isn't exactly my feeling, as I think if a brand truly feels inspired to produce a watch for women, they certainly should. The issue, of course, becomes when
Rising Moonphases by Frederique Constant and Christopher Ward
I'm a firm believer in the idea that you can't effectively judge anything on numbers alone. Looking only at the statistics of a watch completely ignores the finish, the quality, the experience of a great timepiece that forms the base of this hobby. Two new announcements in recent days help make that point brilliantly. Within the past few days, both Christopher Ward and Frederique Constant have announced plans for a new in-house moonphase movement. Beyond that, both of the upcoming watches are sized at 40mm (with the Frederique Constant just a hair larger at 40.5), both feature sapphire crystals, display backs, and automatic winding. By the numbers, then, the two should be nearly identical, but there are huge differences in C. Ward's and Frederique Constant's approach.First, let's take a look at the Frederique Constant Classics Moonphase Manufacture. The Classics Moonphase Manufacture, powered by the new FC-175 movement, represents the 19th in-house movement from FC, and is lightly modi
Hands-On: The Les Indomptables de Cartier Dcor Watch
It is no secret that Cartier does luxury well. As one of the most iconic watch and jewelry brands in the business (and they have been for decades), Cartier never ceases to amaze me in how well they create such beautifully crafted objects. Launched in April of this year, Les Indomptables de Cartier Décor Watch is from the Metiers d’Arts collection is no exception. At first glance it appears to be just a pretty watch with a Panther covering part of the dial. That is until you take it in your hands and realize that the Panther is in fact removable AND a brooch. This type on innovative design exactly why Cartier is one of the best. 1 OF 6 Les Indomptables de Cartier Décor Watch is part of a 30-piece collection and was designed and created at the Cartier Metiers d’Arts Maison in La Chaux-de-Fonds. HODINKEE published a write up on the Maison after it opened earlier this year. The Maison is a converted farmhouse with each floor dedicated to a different
