Drive de Cartier: The New Cartier Men’s Collection
Cartier drives home its iconic design codes in the Drive de Cartier, its new shaped men's collection, introduced this week at SIHH 2016 in Geneva. The cushion-shaped case of the Drive de Cartier is the latest creation designed to reinvigorate the brand's longstanding tradition of shaped watches. The collection has all the Cartier design codes: guilloch inner dial, railroad chapter ring, Roman numerals, highly defined proportions and an element of fine watchmaking mechanics.Aside from the elegant case shape, two outstanding features place the Drive de Cartier definitively in the category of elegant dress watches: the slim tapered profile, or galbe as the French call it, makes it look like an ultra-slim watch, even though it is a fairly standard 11.5 mm thick; and the pattern of the guilloch center, which is uniquely repeated on the outside of the chapter ring, adds elegance. Drive is a full collection, with seven references, including two complications. The Fine Watchmaking version is
My Franc Vila EVOS 8 Cobra Watch Article On AskMen.com
Right before I wrote this article I was fortunate enough to actually meet with Franc Vila himself. He showed me a selection of watches from his collection, including the Cobra models that I wrote about for AskMenwatches-dealer (see link below). It was interesting that I met with the man who made a watch I was about to write about. I was literally assigned to write about the watch a few hours before I met him, so it was a total coincidence really. He is a charismatic fellow who is more a watch enthusiast turned watch company owner as opposed to being a introverted watch maker like the hardcore fellows. He has a deep connection with the designs and a close relationship with his customers. What amazed me about the watch is just how solid they felt. If you've ever picked up a watch that felt like lots of pieces put together, you'll now what I mean. The Franc Vila watches feel like one solid piece. Check out my discussion of his mainstream Cobra Chronograph line of watches.See my Franc Vila
Question about helium valve on left side...
For those of you who own an that has the helium escape valve on the left-hand side, do you find this to be uncomfortable? I am In the market for a good watch, and have previously been looking at Rolex (Submariner, yacht Master, and DJ2). But after looking at the Seamaster Pro 300m, I have to say that it looks more visually appealing then most of the Rolex brands I have tried on.
Patek Service?
Could anyone recomend a decent place to get a few Pateks serviced. I live up in Maine and I found a guy in NH that works on them, has anyone heard or used Carignan Watch Company? Thanks
iwatch mfg. and innards vs. Rolex
I am an Apple fan (typing this from my Mac and we have 3 iPhones). Also, having taken some electrical engineering classes, I have huge respect for the engineering that goes into the iwatch. That said, these videos explain why I (and am guessing others) will never feel the connection to an iwatch that is felt with a Rolex. Also, I get that Rolex has some of the best videos & advertising on the planet. The 2nd iwatch video is Apple's attempt at what Rolex does so well. Not quite on par w/ Rolex, but fairly cool in it's own way. iwatch innards - https://.youtube/watch?v=-3JYGk0uejs (most exciting/interesting vid I could find)Rolex 4130 movement - https://.youtube/watch?v=-7rWZvPuQHk (beautiful video)Inside Rolex's factory - https://.youtube/watch?v=x5ArSjYlJ9Y&t=2s (liked this version in French) Couldn't find a vid of iwatch being made, but found a video about the case - https://.youtube/watch?v=qmaYUhMH1w8&t=4s
