Just for Kicks: 6 Watches That Celebrate Soccer
The so-called “beautiful game” is what we Americans call soccer and what nearly everyone else calls football. Some of the world’s luxury sports-watch makers have gotten in on the excitement, with special-edition watches specially devoted to the sport and its players. Hublot headed by rabid ftbol fan Jean-Claude Biver became official timekeeper for the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Accordingly, the brand used the opportunity to release a plethora of special-edition Hublot World Cup watches. The most technically interesting of these watches is the Hublot Big Bang Unico Bi-Retrograde Chrono, nicknamed the Hublot “Soccer Bang.” Designed to showcase the colors of host country Brazil’s flag, the watch is powered by a new in-house movement, Caliber HUB1260, which features a bi-retrograde chronograph function with the hands recording 15-minute intervals, making it ideal for timing the halves of a soccer match, plus 15 minutes “extra time.” Th
Breguet Marine Royal Ref. 5847 Alarm Watch
In 2004 Breguet launched a new interpretation of the Marine line, and for 2009 they introduce the Marine Royal Ref. 5847 with 300 meter water resistance and an alarm designed to operate under water. The case is an imposing 45mm and is available in 18k pink or white gold. Twin barrels provide the power – one for timekeeping and one for the alarm. Both barrels are wound by a single crown. The Marine Royal naturally possesses the usual diver's-watch features, including a unidirectional bezel inscribed with a graduated 20-minute sector. The bezel's rotation is secured by a blocking pawl, visible and located between the two winding crowns on the case flank. The crowns screw down, and the alarm setting crown and on-off pushpiece, in gold, are sheathed in rubber for easier handling. To improve legibility, the minute markers and minute hand along with the hour hand are coated with white luminous superluminova, while the hour and alarm markers glow blue. Represented by a blue triangular p
Movado SE Extreme Automatic Chronograph & Diver Watches
Remember Movado? Yeah, they are still around. The American-based watch company is still holding its own out there as a decidedly more quiet company with mostly a focus on points of watch sales rather than media and publicity. A few years ago, Movado created the SE Extreme collection which from the very outset was clearly an homage to the Hublot Big Bang. For 2014, Movado adds two new SE Extreme watches as the Movado SE Extreme Automatic Chronograph as well and the Movado SE Extreme Automatic Diver. And for what they are, they aren't too bad.I am just going to say it right now, Movado may as well have called these watches the "SExtreme" collection. Not that they scream sex or anything, but that is pretty much what the names look like after staring at "SE Extreme" for long enough. Let's be clear that in the highly conservative watch and jewelry industry, "sex" is not used enough in product names. Anyhow, as a fan of dive watches, the Movado SE Extreme Automatic 200 Diver is easily the mo
