F.P. Journe Releases Octa Perpetual Calendar
Independent watchmaker Francois-Paul Journe has added a ninth model to his eponymous brand’s Octa collection, called the F.P. Journe Quantime Perptuel, a perpetual calendar timepiece with an instantaneous jump function. The watch, which will be limited to 900 pieces, made its debut in Geneva during the SIHH and GTE watch fairs.A perpetual calendar (“quantime perptuel” in French) displays the exact date along with the day, month, and often the moon-phase by automatically taking into account the variable length of the months and leap-year cycle. Creating such a calendar is one of watchmaking’s most difficult feats, since its movement must have a mechanical memory of 1,461 days, or four years. The mechanism is usually based on a differential gear system from the hour wheel and includes several hundred components, cogs, gears, levers and rockers. A small toothed planet wheel connected to the month's mechanism makes a complete rotation in four years. During
Marcello C. Classic Duochronograph Watch Vs. IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic Watch
Two great watches, two similar designs, and yet two vast different prices. Sizing up what over $10,000 extra will get you. The bilateral chronograph is a beautiful thing. Two registers placed along a vertical radius is classically appealing and high legible. In existence for over 60 years, this style has solidified itself as a true classic. The most notable watch to epitomize this style, at least in a modern sense is the IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic. A venerable monolith of classic proportions and design, it is pure legibility at its finest. The frills on the IWC are in the construction and the materials used. You can opt for a gold case, and the IWC movements are world class, as IWC has been one of the gold standards of pilot's watches for many decades. IWC backs up its watches with a reputation for refinement and reliability, but you certainly pay a premium for it. Once you settle on a watch design you like, there are often many options when it comes to satisfying your new taste.Ma
Introducing: The Unique MB&F Melchior For The Only Watch Auction
MB&F has just announced that they will be donating a unique Melchior (co-created with L'Epée 1839) to the Only Watch auction taking place in November of this year. The Melchior, released at Baselworld earlier this year, is a highly functioning robot-form timepiece that was created in a limited series of 99 pieces. This is the 100th piece. 1 OF 2 The Melchior features 480 components and functions include: jumping hours, sweeping minutes, double retrograde seconds, and an impressive 40-day power reserve due to the five mainspring barrels. What makes the Only Watch Melchior a piece unique is the red shoulder pads, as the other 99 pieces have stainless-steel shoulder pads. 2 OF 2 The Only Watch Auction, in its sixth year, features 44 brands, including MB&F. Each brand has donated a special piece to the auction, which will benefit Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research. The auction is in partnership with Phillips in association with Bacs & R
