Panerai 8-Day Power Reserve Caliber P.5000 Debuts in New Luminor Watches
Officine Panerai’s rapid rise to manufacture status continues with its release of yet another in-house movement, Calibre P.5000, a manual-wound movement with an eight-day power reserve. The new caliber makes its debut in a pair of new watches, the Luminor Marina 8 Days and Luminor Marina 8 Days Oro Rosso. While an eight-day power reserve is rare in wristwatches these days, it has been a part of Panerai’s history: the first watches that the brand created for Italian naval commandos had an eight-day power reserve, a requirement at the time for a unit that needed its timepieces to run reliably for long military operations. Between the end of the 1940s and early 1950s, Panerai, which originated in Florence, used a 16-ligne, manual-wound Angelus movement that met these criteria. The structure of Panerai’s new Caliber P.5000 echoes those of movements from that era, in which the mechanism was contained between two plates, which concealed most of the wheels and allowed only a f
SIHH 2013 Watch Show Recap: Don't Rock The Boat
Today I received an interesting press release from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) regarding the end of the 2013 show. Interestingly enough the title of the release very much mimicked the most positive way I could interpret my feelings about the show. But more on that in a moment. To remind you, SIHH is a large, invitation-only trade show put on by the Richemont Group watch brands as well as a few partners (such as Audemars Piguet). They separated from Baselworld years ago to get better contact with buyers and to be "more luxury." Compared to Baselworld it is quite calm, but nevertheless it is still a hustle and bustle trade show. Just with perhaps better dressed people, wine being served, and a three course lunch menu.SIHH 2013 was enjoyable as ever when it came to seeing friends, colleagues, and meeting new ones. Lots of fellow watch writers came up to me at the show asking what I thought of it and the new watches. Sometimes I would jest "what new watches?" While

Incoming...bit of blue
Hi all - thought I'd share as picked it up today when in the window at the AD. It's the Apollo 17 45th anniversary, and I'm not sure I've seen one on here yet.I love it. Not usually a fan of gold, but it's quite subtle and the blue is dark most of the time and comes to life in the daylight. The ceramic dial and bezel are great, and while it has sapphire it's nicely done. The adjustable bracelet is the nicest I have got (including my Rolexes) and made fitting a doddle. With all the upticks in spec, I think it was pretty good value although very little discount was available. The box is the usual omega thing, and is a thing of beauty albeit it will be seeing the back of my cupboard....Lots of pics - hope you like.
