Historical Perspectives: The True And Sad Story Of J.B. Champion, Jr., The Man Behind The Most Expensive Watch Without Complications Ever Sold At Auction
On November 12, 2012, the watch collecting community watched in wonder as two of the world's most important Patek Philippe wristwatches went under the hammer at Christie's Geneva: a reference 2499 perpetual calendar chronograph in platinum?offered for sale by Eric Clapton (one of two white metal 2499s ever made, with the other belonging to Patek Philippe)?and a reference 2458 that was made especially for Joe Ben Champion, Jr. housing a movement that placed third in the 1948 Geneva Observatory competition. Each would have been the cover lot for any just about any other watch auction, but it just so happened that they were part of the same sale. On paper, many would have assumed that the Clapton 2499 would sell for more than the Champion 2458 C but many would have been wrong. Champion's 2458 was the champion of the sale, bringing in over $4 million. The winner of the watch? Alfredo Paramico, who has since sold it. Omega..By Royal appointment!
Well, maybe not by appointment! I was in the line up at my grocery store checkout today and noticed the cover of Hello magazine had a picture of Prince William wearing a watch! Well, being the true WIS that I am I had to have a look!It looks like a seamaster with hollow hands, black bezel and dial, I am guessing about 40mm in size.If anyone has seen a closer picture and can confirm or correct that would be great!I have a lot of time for the Royal family, hard workers and this young man seems like a pretty decent sort to me!Anyway, thought it would be interesting..I wonder what the other royals wear? Here is a picture of the cover, could not get a higher def one, it actuall looks like the same seamaster Carl (carhaluss) has!
Tried on a few Pateks this weekend

Tell me about this Patek...
I found this glorious little gem locally and am curious if any of you gents (or ladies) could help me with it, I think it;s a Gondolo of some sort. It seems to be a good price based on what I see other Patek watches selling for but I don't know much about it other than it's in white gold and in pretty great, but obviously worn condition. Can anyone tell me a reference number and a fair price? Thanks,E.Here's a pic...
