In my opinion, from the late 1850s until just after WWII, the American watch industry produced more and probably better portable timekeeping machines than the rest of the world combined.I said portable timekeeping machines instead of watches, because during the same time the Swiss produced a lot of fabulous and technically amazing watches. Think about Hermès and suddenly your mind envisions magnificent French leather goods. Yet, this manufacture also has had a very important place in horology, collaborating with Jaeger-LeCoultre, and for decades retailing Universal Genève wristwatches in Paris. Hermès also started producing its own lines of watches in the late 1970s. The Arceau, Heure H, and Cape Cod that I saw during my childhood in France exhibited the elegance, and playful design, characteristic of the brand. Watch Test PAM312
Very fortunate today to have an opportunity to tour a Rolex repair facility. Cool stuff to see. They had this instrument that measures acoustic vibrations. You place your watch on it and it show a digital and graphical output on how your watch is performing. Many of the folks I was with tested their Rolex Subs. I was off target because I wore my Panerai 312 today. I asked if he would test mine and he did. Really nice. It was perfect!! Started out +/- 1 sec but balanced out with 0 variation. Definitely a fun morning. Just thought I would share this experience.
