1938 Pilot's Watch Re-issue...
anyone have any thoughts on this model? anyone own it or did? seems like it doesn't get much love but i'm getting drawn to it...
How much restoration?
A couple of years ago I inherited my dad's old watches. One was an '80s gold plated DeVille quartz, which he was never attached to (it was a retirement gift I think) that I'm inclined to get rid of - more in another post, one day. The other was a watch he kept after he left the RAF. After doing a little bit of research, I understand it to be a relatively rare 1953 MOD / RAF issue. It is complete, in that it contains the disc and spacer found inside the case, but it has seen better days. It works, and keeps pretty good time - but to my mind, the hands don't line up (with the minute hand at 12 o'clock, the hour hand is past the hour, if that makes sense?!). The (I assume) acrylic is fairly scratched, and there seems to be a lot of filth between it and the case. It took some patience and several connections, the geo sphere dial landed on my wrist. The 5167 is truly a beauty to behold, there is not an unfinished surface to be seen. None of the photos I've seen can truly capture its beauty, the watch radiates dashes of colours like an exploding star, I am still in disbelief I went on holiday in Asia, had a beautiful lunch with Ruud Van Driver in Singapore (Paul is an awesome guy), then off to the watches capital of the world in Hong Kong. Too many pieces on every corner, 5712, 5164, 5726, 5960, 5980 and the 5170G ! Just to name a few I ran into in 24 hours, people actually wear them and go about their daily lives.Hot, humid and stormy weather, my 5167 stays accurate to the dot without missing a beat. Being discreet and extremely comfortable, I wore it everywhere and met interesting WIS, a nod is all it took to strike up a conversation. In a local non-touristy restaurant, a gentleman whom shared my table was also wearing an Aquanaut, he gave me a
