Letters To The Editor: How Modern Watchmakers Are Grappling With One Of Breguet's Greatest Inventions (And It's Not The Tourbillon)
This is a wonderful question, that deserves a careful response. Before we can talk about the natural escapement, let's get on the same page about what an escapement does. In a mechanical wristwatch, an escapement translates rotational energy into lateral impulses that is, it turns the rotating of gears into the back-and-forth movement of the balance wheel. There are lots of different types of escapements, but the most popular (by far) is the lever escapement. The lever escapement gives the balance wheel a push in each direction, causing it to oscillate until the watch runs out of power. Laurent Ferrier's natural escapement in action The lever escapement does this by introducing a lever (the pallet fork) in between the escape wheel and balance staff. The lever escapement is so popular because it is easy to manufacture and adjust, while being very sturdy. The problem with the lever escapement is that the type of push, or impulse, that it uses produces s
A Tour Of The Museum In Breitling's New York City Boutique With Technical Director Gerhard Loitz
Breitling's three-story boutique on New York's 57th Street is one of the largest watch stores in the city. What you might not know though is that in addition to a full collection of new watches (ground floor) and a lounge and bar (third floor), the boutique also houses a small vintage museum tucked behind the watchmaking department on the second floor. Included are beautiful chronographs from the early 20th century, funky '70s sport watches, and modern milestones in Breitling's development. Here's a little tour of this hidden gem.?When visiting the Breitling boutique last week, I was fortunate enough to have Breitling Technical Director Gerhard Loitz as my guide to the museum, shedding a lot of light on the little details that make these pieces part of Breitling's history. Here we'll walk you through the exhibition chronologically, starting with a Breitling first. 2 OF 14 Here we have a two-button chronograph dating to 1938. Nautilus 5711 questions
Hi guys! I am seeking for assistance please. I was offered a 2007 Patek Nautilus 5711 blue dial. Condition is unworn and it has not been serviced. Questions: 1) does it need a service? 2) has the retail price gone up? current list from 2012 is $26700.00? 3) would you get this piece or wait for a new one? If you choose this piece what sort of amount would you offer? Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Watches that pop
Hi guys,I don't exactly know how to word my question. But I'm after a new watch, I want something which grabs attention and feels special. What I mean by this, I own a few pieces, two of my favourites, the Tudor BB and JLC reverse ultra thin, however, on the wrist they are easily overlooked and it gets far less compliments than say my BLNR. I would describe the BLNR as being a watch that pops'I'm wanting a 3watch collection. JLC reversal ultra thin, DaytonaC and ....I'm thinking of a day date in yellow gold, or a 15202. Any advice on the two or other watches which are statement pieces? Thanks. Sorry if my question isn't too clear.
