Harry Winston Diamond Corporation has announced the appointment of Frederic de Narp as President and CEO of Harry Winston, Inc., its New York-based jewelry and watch subsidiary, effective January 4, 2010. Mr. de Narp previously served as President and CEO of Cartier North America. He succeeds Tom O’Neill who led Harry Winston, Inc. over the last 5 years. Mr. de Narp joined Cartier in 1991, and was named president and CEO of Cartier North America in 2005. Mr. de Narp’s career in luxury retail began 18 years ago at Cartier in Japan. Over the course of almost 20 years, his climb through the executive ranks at Cartier took him to Tokyo, Switzerland, Italy and Greece, and in 2005 he moved to New York to oversee Cartier North America.Harry Winston Chairman and CEO Robert Gannicott said “We are delighted that Frederic will be joining Harry Winston, Inc. MB&F HM5 CarbonMacrolon Watch
MB&F has a rule that they can't do anything like other brands - a policy that, for the most part, they are pretty good at sticking to. With this newest and third iteration of the Horological Machine No. 5 (HM5), they created a black-cased watch, not with a black coating over metal, but with a novel material they like to call "CarbonMacrolon." Thus, we have a dark version of the 1970s sports car inspired "driver's watch," paired with cool purple accents. The HM5 (reviewed here) is one of my favorite Horological Machines. In addition to being amongst the most affordable (really not saying much), it is also amongst the most wearable. A driver's watch, in the traditional sense, allowed the wearer to read the time at a glance from the side of their watch, with their hands on a steering wheel. The concept is probably about 100 years old, in some form or another, and while it doesn't necessarily apply today, the idea is interesting. I am not sure when the wedge-style driver's watch came ab

Patek 5712 - how durable of a watch?
I've got two Rolexes and I'm looking for my final piece- which I'd buy in a few years. So the Patek 5712 is a possibility because of the design, the moonphase, the metal bracelet (no leather/cloth straps), and more specifically, I want a watch with a clear caseback. That being said, how durable/reliable is the 5712? Obviously I wouldn't be running/working out/letting my kid chew on the watch now and then (thank god for the Sub's 300m WR ) with the 5712. And I know that letting the Patek go on a decade without service like a Rolex isn't a realistic expectation either. My expectation is that I can desk dive and get it wet, i.e. if cooking or washing my hands and some water splashes on it and it will be OK. I also don't want a watch I need to send in every 3 yrs because of an issue. Now I love the Patek given the design & history, but what would ruin it for me is if it is too fragile to handle daily life or if I have to have it spend a 1/3rd of the time out for service. I don'
