Interview: We Ask Audemars Piguet Historian Michael Friedman To Walk Us Through The Best Vintage AP's For Sale In Geneva
If there is one sub-sect of vintage watches that I believe is about to experience a renaissance of sorts, it's vintage Audemars Piguet. For years, I have admired the subtle elegance and incredible design found in early 20th century AP's. I believe them to be some of the most beautiful watches ever made, and based on our visit inside the vault of AP last summer, you guys agreed. There is simply so much to love in this category, and yet we simply don't hear much about it. Sure, there are way, way fewer vintage AP watches out there than any Patek, as we've mentioned, and that just makes them that much more appealing. This season, there are several fantastic vintage AP's coming up for sale, and because this manufacture is one of the few who has a publicly available historical expert, we thought it would be great to get brand historian Michael Friedman's own take on the vintage AP's coming up this weekend and next week in Geneva. That is what you'll find below
Let's Tear The Back Off A Speedy !!!
Tired of looking at the insides of Rolexes...Let's take a look at what makes the Speedy tick..First, of course, we need some tools:....And, of course, a Speedy...And, something for the Case-back. I like L-G tools...Made in the USA. This L-G CWR-600, Waterproof Case Wrench should do the job.. The Speedy back has 6 slots, so I have it set to just use the two opposing positions with the notch sockets. If it had an odd number of slots or holes I would use all three sockets:First step is to remove the bracelet to make it easier to work with:The watch head needs to be secure to avoid slipping etc., so we clamp it up:Carefully using the LG Case Tool, we crack it a bit, ensure no crud is under the case lip, clean things a bit, then voila, we pop off the cover:The Speedy also has an inner cover that sits over the movement:Inside we find one of my favorite movements, the Lemania 1861... Very close to the early 60's 321 MoonWatch movements but with more modern upgrades...Have to keep up with te
after service, crown doesn't screw down flush
i just got my watch back from RSC and i see that the crown is no longer flush when screwed down. it was flush before.they did replace the crown and tube, along w/ doing a full factory service. i unscrewed the crown to set the time and screwed it back down, it did indeed stop short of flush.i'm asking if this is within tolerance or if i should have them fix it.sorry for the crappy photo, but i think it gets the point across.
Coke Ceramic Opinions
Would you prefer a coke with SS or BCLs, a coke with PCLs, or a coke in precious metal? What do you think the kind of coke will come out amongst the above? As far as coming out, I don't think it's going to be Basel 2018. I know a lot of people would like that, but I don't foresee that happening. I think Rolex is focusing on other timepiece changes and of course a new movement. Your thoughts?
