Hands-On: The 1950s Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar Reference 5516 For Sale At Christie's Next Week, And Why I Love It So Much (Live Pics, Thoughts)
I don't know how many times I've admitted this, but I dream of being a vintage Audemars Piguet collector. The watches are so rare, so beautiful, so special, and until recently, completely under the radar. Now they are getting a little more attention – and a great triple calendar chronograph just sold for serious money at Christie's Geneva – but that doesn't mean the world at large has taken notice. And that is why I am writing this article today. A truly world-class watch is coming up for sale next week, and I want to make sure the collecting world at large takes note. It's an Audemars Piguet, from the 1950s, with a full perpetual calendar, two-tone dial, and leap year indicator. It is one of nine ever made, and it just might be the best watch for sale this season. 1 OF 6 Reference 5516 was made in nine examples, six of which feature the moonphase at 6 o'clock. Sad day :(
When cleaning my watch case, and bracelet... I found a tiny ding on the side of the case... so tiny that I didn't notice that it was there prior to cleaning... just what to lament, sometimes it happens without even knowing where it came from...
OopsPatek Service QC quells customers happiness!
.watchprosite/page-wf....open_bLoB_s-0/A 5167 owner sends his watch in for service and polishing. Instead of being full of joy, he's annoyed with by the inept job done on the case, resulting in over-polished lugs and crown protector.
Panerai Service Alternatives
I've recently joined the Panerai family and have what I think is an awesome 121. It is about 11 years old and looks pretty damn good. The two problems I have with it are that it loses about a minute a day and the top chronograph button is very hard to push. Now I know people are much more likely to complain about a problem than praise good or excellent service, but I am a little leery of sending my watch to Ft Worth (unlike my recent good experiences with RSC Dallas). So I can't find much about satisfaction with alternatives like Govbergs in Philly. They seem to handle practically all makes and models. And with this being an El Primero movement, the fact that they also are Zenith ADs is comforting. Any advice would be appreciated.
