Sotheby’s Geneva Sale Brings $8.7 Million
Sotheby's May 15 Geneva sale presented pieces representing five centuries of watchmaking, from 1580 to the present day. The top price was realized by a very rare Patek Philippe ref. 2499 which fetched $815,637, and by one of the most exclusive examples of a stainless steel Rolex Daytona Paul Newman with inverted lines, which brought $233,150. All totaled, the sale yielded $8,753,568 including buyers’ premiums. The top-selling lot, number 185, was a yellow gold Patek Philippe chronograph wristwatch with perpetual calendar, moon phases and tachometer scale. First sold on December 18, 1962, it sold within the pre-sale estimate. The Paul Newman Daytona, lot 280, is an extremely rare example with inverted lines and an unusual signature on the dial featuring Oyster on the third line after Rolex and Cosmograph . Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve 2010 Watch Award Winners
Last night was the watch industry's annual big award show gala event - the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG). These are our Oscars, and the 2010 winners are interesting. A few surprises, and a lot of watches that just keep winning. I was invited to the ceremony, but was unfortunately unable to stick around in Europe long enough after my last trip to go this year. Next year I will go, and might just sport a Timex!Surprises that I am happy to see? Seiko won the prize for the best Sports Watch with the Spring Drive Spacewalk Commemorative Edition watch. MB&F won for best Design & Concept Watch with their HM4 Thunderbolt. The best Men's Watch prize went to Laurent Ferrier for his Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Balance Spring watch, that I am proud to say was first introduced by me to the world on the Internet here.Really happy about everyone that won. Here is the full list.- The Grand Prize of L'Aiguille d'Or (the Golden Hand ): Greubel Forsey - Double Tourbillon 30 Edi
Historical Perspectives: Revisiting The History Of The Omega Speedmaster With The Astronauts Who Wore Them
The official status of Omega’s Speedmaster Professional as that of “Moonwatch” is widely known and celebrated amongst enthusiasts and certainly by Omega themselves. Unlike many brand partnerships, the relationship between Omega and NASA has yielded real, tangible benefits, with the Speedmaster itself making appearances in each of the manned missions to the Moon, and even contributing to one of the greatest dramas of the 20th century, helping the astronauts of Apollo 13 return safely to Earth after an oxygen tank explosion two days into the mission. To gain a more personal perspective on this relationship, Omega sent us to NASA headquarters in Houston, where we had access to astronauts Jim Lovell (Gemini 7, 12; Apollo 8, 13) and Tom Stafford (Gemini 6A, 9A; Apollo 10; ASTP). We heard the first hand account of Lovell’s heroism, and the Speedmaster’s pivotal role in Apollo 13’s return to Earth. 1 OF 26 “Houston, we have a problem.&rd
